Elon Musk's Starlink will provide Wi-Fi from the Space

Internet Wifi from Space

Do you know from which media you are accessing the Internet from your mobile and laptop or whatever? Currently, it's Fiber Optical Cable. Although you are getting it wirelessly from WiFi or mobile tower, ultimately it comes from undersea Optical Fibers.

In this fast-growing race of Internet, Elon Musk is going ahead with the concept of Space Based Internet to provide WiFi directly from Space. Read the full article to know how he will do this and why.

Hey there, I am Madhusudan Somani and you are reading this article at MSS Articles, let's continue...

What is Space Based Internet?

Space-Based Internet is a concept to get internet service directly from the space without the need for optical fibre cables which are currently in use. In Space Based Internet, there will be hundreds or thousands of satellites in the LEO (Lower Earth Orbit) and MEO (Medium Earth Orbit of the Earth.

This seems like a new space war and at this time it is for the Internet.

There are almost 10 companies which are working on this project. Elon Musk's Starlink is going ahead than OneWeb, Boing and other company's projects.

Elon Musk's Starlink Project

The CEO of SpaceX (Aerospace company), and Tesla, Inc. (Automotive company) Elon Musk is working on his project Starlink under SpaceX for Space-Based Internet. His plan is to provide low-cost Broadband (WiFi) internet connection globally from more than 12000 satellites.

Why Elon Musk is more Enthusiast for Starlink?

Elon Musk founded the Aerospace company SpaceX with a vision of enabling people to live on Mars. He knows that it is not simple, it will require much time and also a huge amount of money. He can not get that much amount of money by investors so he has to do something by which he can get a huge amount of money which he will invest on SpaceX Mars mission.

Therefore he is more enthusiast about this project Starlink because if successful, he wants to acquire more than 50% of global internet userbase which will generate a revenue of almost $50Bn per year.

How Starlink will be Implemented?

In the Starlink Satellite Constellation, more than 12000 satellites will be sent to the Lower and Middle Earth Orbits. This is not a simple task, but as usual Elon Musk has taken the dare first to implement this project at the big level.

This will require almost $8Bn and Elon is now looking for investments. The Search Engine King, Google invested $1 Bn in the Starlink project (because Google is all because of the Internet).

For this project, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has approved SpaceX request for Starlink satellite constellation. SpaceX succeeded in the two test satellite (Tintin A & Tintin B) for this purpose. Now 4425 satellite will be sent to LEO and 7518 will be sent to MEO of the Earth to provide global broadband WiFi service.

You can see the below video to get more idea about how this massive satellite system work.

Advantages of Space-Based Internet

  • Currently, almost 50% of the total area in the world is untouched by the Internet. With Space Based Internet, almost 100% area of the Earth will be served.
  • It will reduce the latency rate (buffering time) to a great extent.
  • It will serve low-cost high-speed internet.
  • We will get internet access everywhere even in the forests where we can't get now, which makes it more easy to develop and use IoT (Internet of Things).

Disadvantages of Space-Based Internet

  • According to NASA, there are more than 1200 satellites revolving around the Earth along with 2500+ satellite junk in the space. Starlink satellite constellation may result in satellite collision and more junk in the space.
  • The satellites in LEO which will be moving fast will come closer to the Earth with time. So extra energy will be required to make them in the orbital position.

If you have other advantages and disadvantages in your mind, please let me know in the comments below.

With this concept of Space-Based Internet with Satellite, it seems like a new Space War for the so-called basic service the Internet. Elon Musk is not the only one who is working on it. But he has the advantage of space and rocket technology from his company SpaceX. So it will be easy and cost efficient for him to attain this.

No matter which company will be successful in this project but the ultimate winner of this battle will be the common man, who will then get low-cost high-speed internet.
